City of Moorhead Receives Improved Fire Insurance Rating

This will place Moorhead in the top 10% of the 47,000 communities rated by ISO.

1204-n-firehelmetThe City of Moorhead was recently assessed by the Insurance Services Office (ISO) to establish an updated Public Protection Classification (PPC). The PPC gauges the capability of the local fire department to respond to structure fires in their jurisdiction. This rating is utilized by the insurance industry to underwrite property insurance. The Moorhead Fire Department is pleased to announce that effective November 1, 2014, Moorhead’s PPC rating will improve from a class 4 to a class 3. This will place Moorhead in the top 10% of the 47,000 communities rated by ISO. A PPC 1 is the best and a 10 is the least level of protection.

The fire department, water supply, and the communications center are assessed to make up the overall rating. The fire department’s abilities make up about 50% of the overall score. The water supply and distribution system makes up 40% and the communications center is weighted at 10% of the total.

The Fire Department portion comes from assessing:

Staffing levels/deployment analysis

Training

Prevention/inspection activities

Public Education

Equipment

Firefighting vehicle capabilities

This rating is utilized by many companies in the insurance industry to underwrite property insurance. Moorhead’s improved ability to provide fire protection services should result in a reduction of fire insurance rates for many commercial properties in the City. Check the ISO website for more information about community ratings.
