Moorhead Flooring – Too Good to Close

“We’re not sure whether to say it will be a grand re-opening or a re-grand opening,” Dave Johnson, new owner of Moorhead Flooring said, sitting in a showroom surrounded by samples and displays.

The reason for the confusion is simple. Moorhead Flooring and More opened in 1997 when Roger and Deb Stuhaug realized the part time carpet work Roger was doing could become fulltime. They opened their first store in Dilworth while Roger still worked at The Fargodome. They moved the store to Moorhead 17 years ago. When they decided to retire, they thought they would close the store at 2406 2nd Ave. N.

Enter Dave. Dave has been a businessman in the area for three decades. Dave’s first “hire” was Roger, who will be with the new Moorhead Flooring as a salesman who will target commercial, property management and new residential markets. Growing the business is Dave’s goal, and having Roger as mentor gives him confidence.

Dave really likes one of the things Roger said: “Be honest and straightforward even if it gets in the way of an immediate sale.”

Dave has those same family business practices in mind. “When people walk into the store we want them to know we are here to serve. We want to build a lifelong partnership with every customer. No customer is too small or too big,” Dave said.

Some of that zest comes from his dad, Jerry Johnson, who was a big part of Moorhead Electric. “My dad retired at 75, still working 75-hour work weeks. He is an inspiration and still does some electrical work for us. He and my mom, Verna, havebeen helping get the store ready for our grand re-opening,” Dave says.

His dad’s business credo of always giving the best service possible is personal to Dave, too. It inspired his logo of 24/7/365. He lives close to the store and is willing to make appointments for off-hours.

Moorhead Flooring’s grand re-opening is at the same time as the Parade of Homes. Stop in Sept. 12-18 to meet Dave, see new samples and products and enjoy. You may also call 218.236.0771 or check the soon-to-be posted website

“We want to be the premier supplier of flooring, cabinets, countertops, backsplashes and other interior design products in the Moorhead-Fargo-West Fargo and surrounding area. We have the best products at the lowest prices. We want to compete with the big boys and the big box companies because it provides and maximizes value to customers,” he says.

Moorhead Flooring has thousands of samples for custom ordering with a quick turn-around time.

The floor trend is to hard surface flooring but Dave is quick to say carpet still has its place. The store offers hardwoods, laminates, luxury vinyl planks and tile from Anderson, Shaw, Kirkland, Fusion and others. Carpet brands include Shaw, Mohawk and others. Cabinet brands include Homecrest, Omega and Contractor’s Choice, along with granite, quartz and laminate countertops. Window treatments are also available.

As he wears the many hats of being a business owner, he acknowledges the many, besides Roger, who help him. His partner in the business is Monica Dalquist. His son, Chuck, comes on learning the business, literally, from the floor up. Together, they like the independence of running their own business. “Family is my biggest source of fun,” Dave says, even as they work together to help people have comfortable homes and businesses.

Among his business partnerships are First International Bank & Trust, Wold Johnson P.C., Cole Paper and Fargo Glass & Paint.

Linked with many in the business community but exploding with entrepreneurial spirit, Dave Johnson honors the history of Moorhead Flooring and More while changing Moorhead Flooring into a 21st century business.
