Moorhead teams sweep top places in regional math competition

Several Horizon Middle School West Campus students received individual awards, and Moorhead teams placed swept the top four spots in the Grade 6 Regional Math Masters Tournament held in Moorhead in March. Fifteen teams from the area participated in individual and team rounds.
Individual awards went to Horizon students Jinu Lee, first place, Eleanor Culloton, second place, Isaac Leiseth, third place, Oscar Peterson, fourth place, Brayden Dickelman, sixth place, Ava Simonson, seventh place, McKinley Paul, eighth place, Kinzie Paulson, ninth place, Jacob Gulbranson, 10th place, and Broderick Hansen, 13th place.
The Horizon West Spuds Team placed first out of 15 teams in the Math Masters Tournament. Team members are Jinu Lee, Ava Simonson, Jacob Gulbranson, Ella Larson and Carter Huotori.
The Horizon West White Team placed second in the tournament. Team members are Ella Watzke, Lucy Noonan, Eleanor Culloton, Isaac Leiseth and Oscar Peterson.
The Horizon West Orange Team placed third in the tournament. Team members are Ellie Gess, Will Borud, Broderick Hansen, Payton Gast and Isabella Rausch.
The Horizon West Black Team took fourth place in the tournament. Team members are Kinzie Paulson, McKinley Paul, Brayden Dickelman, Aiden Dufault and Brendan Piekutowski.
Leigh Dornfeld is the Math Masters coordinator.
Math Masters of Minnesota is a statewide competition that challenges students to use higher-order thinking skills and problem-solving abilities in mathematics and recognizes academic effort and achievement.
