CLAY COUNTY UMN FARM FAMILY AWARD
Robert Olson Farms will be awarded the 2025 farm family award.
HAWLEY – Robert Olson Farms near Hawley, Minnesota has spanned generations, first homesteaded by Rob’s maternal great-grandparents in 1872 near Rollag. While the original homestead was in Rollag, the main farm is now based in Hawley, where Rob and his daughter Kari continue to carry on the legacy. Rob’s paternal grandparents also began farming west of Hawley in the 1930s, building a foundation for what became a diversified crop and hog operation. In 2013, the family transitioned away from livestock to focus fully on crop production, adopting no-till practices and cover crops to improve soil health and manage input costs.
Following the passing of second-generation farmer Bob Olson, the family remains committed to continuing the operation. Rob and his wife, Lonna, still work on the farm daily, supporting Kari as she steps into a leadership role. Kari represents the fourth generation of Olsons and the fifth generation of Thompsons to farm in Clay County. Her sisters, Nicole and Stacie, pitch in during planting and harvest, often with their kids alongside them.
Kari is actively involved in the Clay/Wilkin Corn & Soybean Growers board and the local airport board. The family has long supported the Hawley community, with deep involvement in church, cooperatives and ag organizations. For the Olsons, farming is a family effort, shaped by experience, faith and a commitment to continuous improvement.
