11th Street underpass: 2024-2026 construction update
MnDOT resumes monthly Coffee & Construction updates.
Starting Tuesday, May 20, at 9 a.m., and e very third Tuesday of the month through October, MnDOT will resume hosting monthly Coffee & Construction public meetings at the Hjemkomst Center, 202 1st Ave N.
Representatives from MnDOT, Ames Construction and the city of Moorhead will share updates and answer questions about the current progress on the 11th Street underpass. We encourage businesses and residents to attend to learn more about upcoming Main Avenue closures starting June 2.
All operations are back up and running on the 11th Street underpass. Over on First Avenue, crews continue to finish up underground pipe installation, tying into the lift station near First Avenue and 11th Street. That work is ongoing, but we are getting closer to completion of that work in this stage. Once the pipe work is done, they’ll begin shaping, grading and putting the road back together.
At the KO and Hillsboro lines, the bridges are starting to look like bridges! Crews are continuing concrete work and getting the abutments completed so the steel beams can be set at the KO underpass. At the Hillsboro line, that work is already done and the railings have been installed. They’re finishing up some last minute items, getting ready for the railroad to return this month to switch the rail back over to the mainline and remove the shoofly. Once that switch takes place, crews will start excavations to begin building the roadway under the new bridge.
Beginning June 2, work will start on Stage 2 along Main Avenue. When this starts, both First Avenue and Main Avenue (within the project limits) will be closed to thru traffic. The detour will follow 13th Street S and 2nd Avenue S.
Business access will be maintained, but keep in mind you may need to enter from a different area than you’re used to. Please check with your destination to find out the best way to get to them.
As always, we appreciate your patience and understanding as the project progresses.
Other reminders:
Train horns have resumed in the Downtown Quiet Zone during construction hours (Monday – Friday, 6am – 7pm). This is a requirement of the railroad, and we appreciate your understanding as worker safety is prioritized.
Moorhead businesses are open during construction! If your destination falls within/near the work zone or along the detour routes, please check in with the business to determine the best route there.
Never enter an area that’s blocked by barriers or cones. It is not safe to drive, walk or bike around barricades, even in areas where workers aren’t present or active. Those boundaries are set up for your safety. There are signed detours installed for both motorists and pedestrians. Please use those routes.
There may be other projects in Moorhead that could affect your travel routes, so please check in with the City of Moorhead for plans and impacts. Visit their website or follow the City of Moorhead on Facebook.
