Cross-Stitch Art Unveiling: Horizon Middle School Students Showcase Talent In Moorhead Area Public Schools’ 150th Anniversary Celebration

Moorhead Public Schools

As part of the year-long celebration commemorating the 150th anniversary of Moorhead Area Public Schools, a remarkable public art display is set to be unveiled on May 9th, 5:30-7 p.m., during Track and Field Night at Horizon Middle School. Crafted with care and creativity by the talented students of Horizon Middle School, this event promises an evening of community celebration, creativity and artistic appreciation.
Funded by a Legacy Grant through the Lake Regions Art Council, Moorhead Area Public Schools’ sixth grade students embarked on a journey of learning and creation. Under the guidance of art teachers Trudy Stubson and Samantha Saarion, students delved into the intricate art of cross-stitching, mastering the technique to contribute to a large-scale permanent installation of the beloved Spuddy mascot.
The Legacy Organization Grant, which aims to enhance arts access and learning opportunities, has enabled the realization of this unique project. Through this initiative, students not only honed their artistic skills but also gained a deeper understanding of cultural heritage and the significance of art in their community.
Measuring an impressive 16 feet by 12 feet, the giant cross-stitch design of the Spuddy Mascot serves as a testament to the creativity and dedication of the students involved. Inspired by Spanish artist Raquel Rodrigo, whose work has captivated audiences worldwide, the installation at Horizon Middle School’s West entrance is sure to become a cherished symbol of school pride and artistic expression.
“We are thrilled to showcase the talent and hard work of our students as part of the district’s 150th anniversary celebrations,” said Superintendent Dr. Brandon Lunak. “This project not only highlights the artistic abilities of our students but also reinforces the importance of arts education in fostering creativity and community engagement.”
The unveiling ceremony promises to be a memorable event, complete with music, activities, and the opportunity to admire the new giant cross-stitch Spuddy. Attendees can also participate in a drawing for prizes, adding to the excitement of the evening.
The district invites Horizon families and the community to celebrate the rich artistic heritage of Moorhead Area Public Schools and the creative spirit of its students on May 9 as well as a new era of artistic excellence and community pride.
