GMD Takes Off at Airport

Hundreds of residents of all ages, from toddlers to seniors, trekked to Moorhead Municipal Airport Saturday morning for the 30th anniversary of Wings and Wheels. The Greater Moorhead Days highlight brought together private pilots from throughout the region, who flew in with their aircraft, along with car buffs showing off their classic vehicles.

Highlighting the event was the official ribbon-cutting for Florence Klingensmith Field, the designation that honors the local aviation pioneer. Klingensmith became one of the nation’s earliest “flygirls” nearly 100 years ago.

Said Marisa Bengston-Loerzel, who spurred efforts to name the field in Florence’s honor, “Florence was brave and she was bold and she was determined, at a time when women were not encouraged to be those things.” (Photos/Nancy Hanson and Caleb Fuglestad.)
