Veteran’s Corner

We just learned that since a large rodent saw his shadow we are in for six more weeks of winter. Luckily we have been blessed with a hearty resolve. I have friends all over the country and am also asked, how do you live where its so cold? We adapt. We dress accordingly and plan around weather events. There is give and take with everything. I’m quite thankful we do not have an abundance of insects and snakes that would kill us if bitten. Or oppressive heat. You can only take off so much clothing.
Speaking of weather, we are still plugging away at the national cemetery. We have invested in quality clothing and stay comfortable. While we can’t prevent the porta potty from freezing and count on the outhouse to be open and available in the winter, we plan accordingly.
A bit of good news, We had a meeting with VA higher ups last week, and can move forward with the building prep type activities. Land surveys, hauling dirt and fill etc… Great things are gonna happen.
As some know, I am a horseman. I firmly believe in the benefits of working with and caring for horses. My wife is now one of those “crazy horse people” lol. She now gives riding lessons and helps with various equine programs at Mighty Oaks Equine learning center. Every Saturday (when temps are above 20) she is there. I spoke to the owner about hosting a veteran’s camp or something of the sort. To paraphrase her response “Mighty oaks would be honored to share our incredible horses with any Veterans who may like to spend time experiencing the peace, calm, and joy being close to a good horse. Feel the benefits of the proven positive effects of horses on people, all while showering a horse with attention.” The military connection to horses cannot be understated. I often think when traveling the vast spaces of North Dakota what it would have been like to ride that distance on horseback. Check out Mighty Oaks on facebook.
This past weekend the Moorhead American Legion (specifically the Legion Riders) hosted their annual “Freezin for a Reason” it was a success. Great group doing great things for our Veterans.
Please remember that giving hearts day is February 12th. There are lots of worthy causes to donate to. The Fargo Memorial Honor Guard is still collecting donations for the Veterans memorial center as well as funds to operate our organization. Uniforms are crazy expensive but we believe in looking sharp.
Please consider a donation.
