We have a S’MORE controversy for you. Amy says you can make a “savory s’more” and JJ says it’s just a strange, over-the-fire fondue. Either way, if you want to make a few people around the bonfire confused (and maybe a little inspired), here are a few new ways to enjoy the classic summertime favorite.
The classic s’more includes a graham cracker (broken in half), 3 (or 6) squares of a Hershey’s chocolate bar and a toasted marshmallow. Now, let’s get creative.
Here are some graham cracker substitutes to try: fudge stripe cookies (might not need chocolate then!), chocolate chip cookies, a waffle cone, a croissant, or a donut. And, if you are brave enough to add some saltiness to it – how about trying a potato chip (think the ruffled kind, so it has some sturdiness to it), a ritz cracker or a pretzel crisp!
If you want to think about substituting the chocolate, you could try a Reese’s peanut butter cup, Hershey’s cookies n’ cream, a dark chocolate bar, a peppermint patty or try a spread of nutella!
JJ says the most important addition… a little piece of bacon to take it up a notch!
Now, let’s get into a savory take on s’mores (or, fine… outdoor fondue). Use a sturdy cracker and try warming cheeses like mini brie, gruyere, fontina, gouda, mozzarella, or smoked cheddar over the fire. Don’t forget the meat – add a slice of salami or prosciutto. And, if you want to kick it up a notch, throw some stone ground mustard or fig jam out to add to your savory s’mores.
There are no unhappy campers with all these options. Here’s to enjoying many more evenings around a fire with good snacks – and friends. (And, don’t forget the napkins.)
