Summer Waste Programs in Clay County

Trash Talk

Mara DeRung

Things pick up for solid waste departments during the summer months. Composting services are added. As residents tackle projects at home, drop offs at the household hazardous waste facility and demotion landfill increase.
Yard waste was banned from landfills in Minnesota by state statute 115A.931 in 1992. During the summer months most cities in Clay County offer a site to dispose of yard waste. Contact your city for drop off location, hours, and other details. A bin for yard waste is also located at the Clay County Resource Recovery Center at the corner of 15th Ave North and 34th Street in Moorhead.
The City of Moorhead collects yard waste at the curb. Residents must use compostable or paper bags, or reusable containers for curbside yard waste collection. The city collects this yard waste and processes it into compost. For more information or to check the availability of finished compost, please call 218.979.9516.
A better option for yard waste is to not bag when mowing. If one third or less of the length of the grass is taken off each time you mulch when mowing it counts as one of the three recommended yearly applications of nitrogen fertilizer. It is important that each cutting is one third or less of the height of the grass. Longer clippings will not thatch down as easily and may make brown spots in the lawn.
The Clay County Household Hazardous Waste Facility (HHW) sees a lot more material dropped off in the summer. Used oil, paint, and petroleum-based adhesives are a few of the items accepted at the HHW. The HHW is located at the Clay County Resource Recovery Center on 15th Ave N in Moorhead. If you have any questions about the Household Hazardous Waste facility, give them a call at 218 299-5077.
The Clay Demolition Landfill is a privately-owned landfill in Clay County. Only demolition materials are accepted at this landfill. Demolition materials are inert materials from construction and demolition projects. Hours at the Clay Demolition Landfill change from winter to summer. Please call Comstock Construction at for details at 218 498-2430.
