Moorhead City Council

approves Recycling Contract

The City of Moorhead renewed the final option year of its agreement with MinnKota Recycling to collect, process, and market recyclable materials from the City’s residential recycling program. Under this agreement, MinnKota will reimburse the City an amount equal to fifty percent of the market value of each item.

MinnKota Recycling is a full-service, community-based recycling provider. They provide services for over 2,000 commercial accounts, including the marketing and processing of recyclable materials for the cities of Moorhead, Fargo, and West Fargo.

MinnKota has provided this service to the City since 1991. The terms of the most recent agreement were for a three-year period that began on January 1, 2011. The City had the option to renew this agreement for two additional one-year periods under the same terms and conditions. The first option year was exercised in 2014, and Steve Moore, Public Works Director, recommended to exercise the final option year of the agreement beginning January 1, 2015.

The amendment will include an updated list of materials that MinnKota will accept for processing and marketing such as the types of cardboard, glass, and plastics. Community members can update their recycling routines with the following information.

· Cardboard: Corrugated cardboard boxes, boxboard, and brown Kraft bags.

· Glass: Clear and colored glass bottles, jugs, or jars. Glass does not need to be separated by color.

· No window glass, light bulbs, mirrors, or Pyrex glass.

· Plastics: Bottles, jugs and tubs with recycling symbols #1, #2, #4, and #5, which include clean plastic containers such as soda bottles, milk, detergent, shampoo bottles, yogurt, cottage cheese, cool whip containers, ice cream pails, and margarine tubs.

· #7 (bottles only) are also accepted. However, caps, lids, pumps, and sprayers are not accepted. No other #7 material will be accepted.

· Containers with recycling symbols #3 and #6 are not accepted. These types include Styrofoam, beverage cups, trays, fast food containers, egg cartons, clear or black dinner trays, vegetable oil/motor oil/antifreeze containers, plastic bags, plastic piping, siding, shower curtains, lawn chairs, swimming pools, or storage tubs.
