Pop Lit Book Club, 7:00 pm @ Moorhead Public Library at 118 5th St. S. Winner of the 2013 Man Booker Prize and the basis for an upcoming BBC TV series, The Luminaries by Eleanor Catton is the Pop Lit Book Club’s first pick for the new year. The Luminaries is a sprawling Wild West-style story set in 1860s New Zealand that features a revolving cast of characters who each provide their point-of-view of the mystery at the heart of this novel. All are welcome, so join us for an illuminating conversation and free popcorn.

Friday, Jan 17:
Board Game Day, 12:00 pm @ Moorhead Public Library at 118 5th St. S. It’s time to play some games. Grab a game from your shelf and bring it to the library, and be ready to test your mettle with dice, cards, meeples, and tiles. With a quiet room and plenty of tables, we have you covered for a good old-fashioned game day. Free.

CAPLP Housing Outreach, 1:30 pm @ Moorhead Public Library at 118 5th St. S. Lakes and Prairies Community Action Partnership will host office hours at the library every Monday from 10-12 pm and every Friday from 1:30-3:30 pm to assist people with housing and support services. Saturday, Jan 18:
Cardboard Sled Race, 9:30 am @ Mickelson Sledding Hill at 901 Oak St. N. in Fargo. Time to flex your recycling muscles. Gather your supplies and test your hand at creating an amazing cardboard sled. There will be sled races and a contest for most creative sled. Registration begins at 9:30am in the warming house with races starting at 10:00am. Pre-registration is not required.

Beautifully Wrapped Luncheon, 10:30 am @ Moorhead Public Library at 118 5th St. S. This is a community network and empowerment luncheon event for the Fargo and Moorhead community. The event is free and open to all, but a RSVP is required for lunch. The event is sponsored by the non-profit organization, “The Birthing of a Diamond.”  Please come out and meet your community, get help and assistance, and/or to find out how you can be a part of what our growing community is doing.

Fargo Masonic Vendor & Craft Show, 11:00 am @ Fargo Masonic Center at 1405 3rd St. N. Come see our local vendors and crafters. It all takes place from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. Free.

Open Skate, 2:00 pm @ Moorhead Sports Center. Admission is $2 for kids (age 17 and under), $3 for adults, and $5 for family skate. There is limited skate rental available for $1.

FM Choral Artists: Cathedral Classics, 2:00 pm @ Sts. Anne & Joachim Catholic Church at 5202 25th St. S. in Fargo. FM Choral Artists will do a world premiere of a new, seven-movement work by Connor Koppin titled “I Call Your Name” for choir, piano, and string quartet with texts by MPR personality and poet Brian Newhouse. Also included on the program will be music by J.S. Bach, Antonio Lotti, Pablo Casals, and Adolphus Hailstork to make it a riveting concert of cathedral classics. $5-$15.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day 2020, 9:45 am @ Memorial Auditorium at Concordia College. “Not Racist” the white moderate myth includes keynote speakers Ijeoma Oluo, New York Times best-selling author, and Janaya Khan, activist known with in the Black Lives Matter movement as “Future.” Free.

Fargo Moorhead Area Music Club presents Michael Helm, 1:00 pm @ First Presbyterian Church at 650 2nd Ave. N. in Fargo. Michael Helm, a former jazz pianist in Las Vegas, will present a program of his jazz accompaniments he used for famous singers. He is presently a piano tuner and technician in Fargo. Everyone is welcome. Free.

Arc Games & More, 7:00 pm @ Murray Hall at MSUM in Moorhead. Arc Games and More, which takes place on the 3rd Monday of the month, September – May, is a place to connect with others and the community in an environment that fosters friendships and celebrates individual abilities and talents. Each session will include activities and creative activities that appeal to children, teens and adults, using art, music, dance, physical activities, food, science, crafts, various hobbies, community groups and more.
