Candy Cane Punch

The Sound of Music is playing on TV again this weekend. I love the music and the story of the von Trapp family of Austria and their governess, Maria. I looked up some information on the Internet and read some interesting facts about the family. I have seen versions of this performance in several different plays. I have never been disappointed, but one performance that stands out in my mind is when Borup High School performed this musical in the late 70’s. It was one of the best, with Kellee Guttormson and Lori Kuball as some of the players, I do not remember the others in the cast; sorry!

The recipe for this week was shared with me by a lady from our church who had been served this punch at a birthday party. It would be perfect for holiday parties, as it is very festive with peppermint ice cream; this flavor is usually seasonal. If peppermint ice cream is not available, you may crush 15-20 hard peppermint candies or small candy canes and add to a half gallon of softened vanilla ice cream. This is more like a dessert than a beverage. Merry Christmas!

2 Jars strawberry jelly (10 oz. each)

2 Liters of lemon-lime soda (divided)

2 Quarts peppermint stick ice cream

Miniature candy canes

In a large pan, melt the jelly over low heat with 2 cups of lemon-lime soda. Chill the jelly mixture and remaining soda. Just before serving, place 6 cups of ice cream in punch bowl. Gently stir in the jelly mixture and add remaining soda. Add remaining ice cream by scoopfuls. Garnish the punch bowl with mini candy canes.
