Garage Sale 101

I have always been a garage sale junkie and have had a lot of garage sales, so I am going to give you some good tips to make some money on this year’s sale.

First, I look at the signs or ads… rummage sale sounds too much like garbage sale and I picture people swarming around a table full of clothing… rummaging through the pile. But when I see a nicely made sign that says MEGA SALE, Gigantic yard sale, Monster garage sale… I am all over it.

A lousy sign often means lousy sale. The sign that is faded out and poorly made is often someone who had this same sale 5 times a year and the items are also faded and in poor condition.

I always like the signs that say “Something for everyone” I know I don’t have to just look at baby clothes and fruit jars. I also know I might find something for a friend at this one.

Signs at your sale can be good too. “Not responsible for accidents signs” don’t mean a heck of a lot. If ya got bare electrical wires run all over the floor where someone can get electrocuted or trip… that sign ain’t gonna help you much. A good sign to put up is, “Everything here works unless we say it doesn’t”.

PRICE EVERYTHING! People hate to ask about the price. If they see a price, they may offer a little less, but at least they ask. ALWAYS have a lot of “Stuff” in the sale. My wife and I won’t stop at a sale if there’s one little table in the drive. We might miss a good buy sometimes, but that‘s just the way it is. Offer to sell some friends or neighbors you’ll put some of their stuff in your sale to make it bigger.

CLEAN everything up before you put it on the sale; no one likes to buy stuff that looks like it might have cooties.

DO NOT make comments and hard sell talk on people every time they pick up something to look at. It’s irritating! If I want to know about something I’ll ask and you pushing me isn’t going to help the sale.

If you are priced a little high, you might want to have a sign that says, you’ll consider offers or something like that, if you are willing to deal.

Some say to put all the men’s stuff together, and have everything in sections, but I have had good luck kind of sprinkling some kitchen gadgets in the men’s section and some men’s gadgets on the ladies table… keeps em looking around more.

Just don’t have it so cluttered ya can’t see everything well, and Good luck!
