Moorhead is growing in more than one way

Starting a garden this year? Maybe a small one? Moorhead has some options that you might not be aware of. At our Moorhead Library are two opportunities for gardeners.

1) Red River Regional Seed Library. The Seed Library is a small set of drawers with seeds packets in alphabetical order. It’s basically a “community-based seed bank, offering free heirloom, organic, and open-pollinated seeds to home and community gardeners, who then return seeds grown at the end of the season”, according to their Facebook page. It was started last year by Kailyn Allen and Jamie Holding Eagle, Moorhead gardeners, to encourage gardening in our community. I checked out the drawers and they are full of peas, and beans, flowers, and variety of unique seeds, all ready to go in your garden. At the end of the season, it’s your opportunity to give back by harvesting some of the seeds, and returning them to the Library. It’s a very cool concept.

2) One Vegetable, One Community is a Moorhead-Fargo community opportunity to connect our community in conversation through gardening. Their goal is to distribute 1,000 packets of buttercup squash seeds throughout our community. There is a display with packets and information at the Moorhead Library.

Good opportunities and a good year to give it a try… and if you have a huge success, you can share with the Dorothy Food Pantry or Churches United. That sounds like a win for everyone and I’m going to start small with a container garden. Join me in whatever way you can.
